The presidency of South Korea is one of the toughest jobs in the world. Are you tough enough for it?

기자 : 한국의 대통령직은 세계에서 가장 힘든 직업들 중 하나다. 이에 충분히 강하다고 생각하는가?

I have government experience. I was a member of the National Security Council. I oversaw the overall preparation for the [2007] Summit between the North and the South and have experience dealing with North Korea. As a lawmaker, I was a member of the National Defense Committee. I am the best-prepared candidate to overcome our current crisis of security, diplomacy and the economy, and to rebuild our nation.

문 : 나는 국정 경험이 있다. 국가안보위원회(NSC)의 일원이었다. 한국과 북한 사이의 [2007년] 회담 준비를 총괄했으며 북한을 상대한 경험을 가지고 있다. 국회의원으로써 국방위의 일원이었다. 현재 외교, 경제, 안보 위기들을 극복하고 국가를 다시 재구축하는데 가장 준비된 후보다.

You’ve said that your favorite English word is “dream.” What is your dream?

기자 : 가장 좋아하는 영어 단어가 꿈이라고 말한 바 있다. 당신의 꿈은 무엇인가.

To achieve a mature democracy, prosperity, human rights, and peace between the North and the South.

문 : 성숙한 민주주의, 번영, 인권, 그리고 남북 간의 평화를 성취하는 것이다.

There is a new president in the White House who is very different from the last president, and who has been saying some aggressive things about North Korea. Do you think you could work with Trump?

기자 : 백악관에는 지난 대통령과 매우 다른 새 대통령이 있고, 북한에 대해 적대적인 발언을 해오고 있다. 당신은 트럼프와 함께 일할 수 있다고 생각합니까?

President Trump occasionally makes aggressive pronouncements about the North, but I recall him once saying that he can talk with Kim Jong Un over a hamburger. President Trump is also critical of the previous policy of strategic patience of former U.S. administrations, calling it a failure as it failed to change North Korea.

I believe President Trump has a pragmatic view. In that sense, I believe we will be able to share more ideas, talk better, and reach agreements without difficulty.

문 : 트럼프 대통령은 가끔 북한에 대해 공격적인 언사들을 만들지만, 나는 그가 김정은과 함께 햄버거를 먹으며 얘기할 수 있다고 말한 적이 있음을 떠올린다. 또한 전 미국 행정부의 전략적 인내라는 이전 정책이 북한을 변화시키는데 실패를 초래한 실패작이라며 비판적이다.

나는 트럼프 대통령이 실용주의적 관점을 가지고 있다고 믿는다. 그런 면에서, 우리는 더 많은 아이디어를 공유하고, 더 나은 대화를 하며, 어려움 없이 합의에 도달할 수 있을 것으로 믿는다.
