All signs point to North Korea having fired this missile.

A missile launched off the California coast Tuesday afternoon may have been launched by Communist dictatorship North Korea as a show of strength ahead of the G20 Summit scheduled to be held in South Korea tomorrow.

The missile was filmed by a helicopter owned by local television news outlet KCBS News at about 5pm Pacific time on Tuesday. Its distinctive contrail shows the object flying out of the ocean and straight up into the sky.

The helicopter crew estimated the contrail was approximately 35 miles west out to sea, north of Catalina Island.

Navy officials initially stated they were unaware of any missile launch in the area. Officials from the Pentagon, Air Force and other military institutions claim they have no idea who fired the missile and are investigating. They have speculated that it may have been launched by a private party, not a government. A North Korean submarine is also speculated to have been the culprit of the destruction of a BP oil rig in the Gulf Coast earlier this year.

North Korea Develops a Submarine Missile With Shooting Range 2,500km

North Korea is developing a long distance submarine missile and is in the midst of stationing it reported the U.S. Congressional Research Service (CRS) on the 6th.

According to the CRS, the long distance missile which can be launched from a submarine or vessel has a shooting range exceeding 2,500km and is currently being stationed in position.

It seems that North Korea imported and made improvements on the Soviet Union’s R-27 missile (SS-N-6 named by NATO) which is known to be more accurate than the North’s scud missile of the ‘90s. In the report, the CRS analyzed that North Korea had enhanced the missile so it could be used on a submarine and suggested the possibility of Russian technicians assisting in the development.

There is some persuasive reasoning behind the CRS report. In 1992, a time where the Soviet Union had collapsed and the nation was in turmoil, North Korean authorities secretly paid Russian technicians and brought them to North Korea.
